Fifty Shades of 'Eh'.

So. I've been reading the Fifty Shades series. Yes, I got sucked in - but it's so hard not to when it's all you hear about! The same thing happened with Twilight, and boy, did I regret that! I won't go into it, but (in my opinion) the writing was atrocious, the protagonist was pathetic (sorry!) and there were many things left unexplained - my pet hate concerning stories, whether in film or novel form.

I'LL PROBABLY INADVERTENTLY POST SPOILERS, SO PLEASE DON'T KEEP READING IF YOU HAVE NOT YET READ THE BOOKS.
____________________________________________

I started reading Fifty Shades of Grey, and I was quite skeptical after hearing that it started as a Twilight fan-fiction. There are many similarities: the rich man wanting the somewhat plain girl for no good reason, him being overly protective, the girl being clumsy, but extremely independent, the fact that every boy in the world seems to want her, etc. No sparkly vampires though, so kudos to the author for that.

I am about 30 pages away from the end of the second book, and I am curious to know what will happen, as the last few pages of the first book were surprising (and totally sucked me into reading the second one). I am still currently very 'eh' about it all, hence the post title. They are not books that I will ever read again.

I'm not sure what to make of the sex scenes. They are graphic, and very to-the-point. I don't know if they are particularly well-written, but I guess they probably don't need to be. After the thirtieth one though, I just started glossing over them, as it felt like I was reading the same thing again and again.

The writing isn't the absolute worst, but it is clear that the author just started typing away, using a thesaurus on every fourth word (not that I am one to judge, my grammar leaves a lot to be desired). It was repetitive, and I just got sick of reading the same stupid phrases over and over. Some of the terms that got to me the most:
- inner goddess;
- oh my;
- my sex - now, I've never read erotic literature, so I'm not sure if that's a common description, or if the author was just too guileless to use more mature terms such as 'va-jay-jay' haha. Either way, I don't like it, and it bothers me.

I wish I had my book with me now, I know there are a few more!

Anyway, this isn't a review, just some things that have been stood out whilst reading. I wanted to ask: are you reading the series? What are your thoughts?

Most importantly, when you are reading, what or who does Christian Grey look like to you? Or Ana, for that matter? When I read books, peoples faces are never clearly shown in my mind, unlike their surroundings. Buildings, scenery, playrooms are all very clear in my mind, but faces are not. Ana doesn't have a face when I am reading. Christian, however, is Simon Baker. It took a few days for me to figure it out, after trying to pinpoint the face I had thought up. The character vaguely reminded me of Simon Bakers' character in the film adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada - whose name was Christian Thompson, funnily enough. Very odd, as he doesn't really match the description of Grey.

This is my Christian Grey for some strange reason. Who is yours?

    1. I borrowed a friends copy, as I had a feeling I wouldn't love it. Phew!

      Glad to hear I'm not the only one who doesn't give characters faces! I thought my imagination was just shot :P

  2. haha like everyone else I keep hearing about this book, I just don't think I'd find it very interesting, lots of people like yourself have said they are not very good books.

    I never have time for reading anyway :P Hope you're having a good weekend!

    1. The story is quite boring, honestly. I guess the 'sexy' parts are the most interesting part, but only because I've never read anything containing scenes like that. And they got old quite quickly.

      I had a lovely weekend, I hope yours was relaxing! :)

  3. OK well I have finished the first book and about to finish the second and now I am calling it 50 shades of boring. I dont know why... I just think its a little too far fetched and repetitive.

    Christian reminds me of the guy from true blood. I forget his name and my Ana is a combo of rachel bilson crossed with anne hathaway ..... something like that ....

    I just dont know I am not into the 2nd book as I am the first. I am mehhhh about it all.

    1. Haha, I hear you! I have read about 100 pages of the third one... even more boring than the first two so far! I knew it would be as soon as I read the prologue. Can't wait to get it over and done with, honestly. So very, very repetitive, as you said!

      I had to google the True Blood guy, as I've never watched it. It's interesting how the character can look so different from reader to reader.

    1. It totally sucked me in too, I couldn't stop! I also couldn't wait to be finished with it though... It was an easy read - light entertainment, if you will. I'm not a fan of chick lit (I'd rather watch chick flicks and read other novels) and the story was repetitive and predictable and the writing annoyed me (I know I sound like a douche, but it did! haha). Basically, it was fun to read, but I definitely won't be reading it again.

      I am glad that so many people did enjoy it, and that it has somewhat made erotic literature a non-taboo subject now! Thanks for your input! I'd be upset if something I really liked was being bashed all over the place - hopefully people will ease up on it soon :)
